Week 7 Posting – IPS

Posted on October 26, 2024December 25, 2024 By TekTinkers No Comments on Week 7 Posting – IPS

IPS (intrusion Prevention System) works along side of IDS (intrusion Detection System). I found this to be particularly interesting in the way the two performed. Initially, my thoughts were that you keep working on your PC and then a notification pops up stating the system has detected malware. this of course sends you into a mental state of disarray as you start thinking of every movie you’ve ever seen and how the user’s life was destroyed for the continuing hour and a half. Die Hard illustrated how a hacker could get malware and just how bad their days could get. These are all things that go through my imaginative mind but not through the system.

Sending little notifications to your desktop to change your whole schedule for the next week as you’d need to perform backups, find out what other systems might be connected and infected, wiping everything and resetting systems is an example of IDS. It waits till it sees something then says, “Hey, we have a problem”. This is still good as the intrusion won’t stick around destroying more of what it can, at least it is being taken care of.

IPS, however, looks at packets being sent inbound to is system and filters through them. It compares what it sees in the packets to an already existing and forever updating database of malicious stuff. This is great in my opinion, rejecting information before it hits your system is awesome to me. And now with the development of AI (Artificial Intelligence) and its integration into security, my online content and personal files will be even more safe than before which is okay by me!
