- Wildfire layers show active incidents from public feeds and may not include every fire.
- Browser notifications, if you turn them on, can be blocked, delayed, or missed.
- You need an internet connection. The service is provided as available, with no uptime guarantee.
For warnings about immediate danger, use a NOAA Weather Radio receiver, Wireless Emergency Alerts on your phone, trusted local media, and weather.gov. Call 911 for emergencies.
Data sources and attribution
This site uses publicly available weather and map data, including:
- NOAA / NWS: active alerts, forecasts, MRMS radar, and related map layers from NOAA OpenGeo and related services. Radar loops the last hour, with a new frame about every two minutes. Frames crossfade so the loop does not pop.
- NOAA nowCOAST: GOES and global geostationary longwave (infrared) cloud imagery, so clouds show in daylight and at night. Lightning strike density comes from NLDN and GLD360 derived maps, updated about every 15 minutes.
- GOES GLM / FreeLightning.com: individual lightning flashes from the Geostationary Lightning Mapper, shown as strike points on the map.
- NIFC WFIGS: active wildfire perimeters, limited to fires above a minimum size. The map shows a flame at the fire and an orange outline of the mapped burned area.
- NOAA NDBC: offshore and coastal buoys, with water temperature and wind direction.
- Esri World Topographic Map: the 2D base map, including country and state boundaries.
- OpenStreetMap: address search, using Nominatim.
- Cesium: the 2D North America map.
Map tiles and weather layers load in your browser, so an internet connection is required. Weather data comes from this site, which keeps recent NOAA and NWS responses so the map can load faster.
Trademarks
National Weather Service, NOAA, and related names and logos are used for descriptive attribution. NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards is a registered trademark of the National Weather Service, used here only to describe the type of public weather information available from official sources.
Esri, Cesium, Maxar, and other provider names are trademarks of their respective owners. US Weather Globe is a TekTinkers project and is not endorsed by NOAA, NWS, or Esri.
Privacy
Saved locations, alert preferences, and similar settings stay in your
browser (localStorage). They are not sent to this server unless you
use a feature that needs a network request, such as looking up an address or a forecast.
If you turn on browser notifications, alert checks run in your browser and use NWS data for the places you choose. The web server may keep standard access logs.
Weather radio towers
Purple tower icons on the map are online NOAA weather radio streams from public sources. Click a tower to listen, and click it again to stop. Streams may be delayed, and they are not for the protection of life or property.
